### समासः कः?
'समास' इति समासः। इस प्रकार 'समास' शब्द का अर्थ है— संक्षेपण। अर्थात् दो या दो से अधिक पदों में प्रयुक्त विभिन्नताओं, संयोग से एक पद बनाना। यथा— गायनकुशल = गायनकुशल। इसी तरह राज्ञ: पुरुष: = राजपुरुष: पदों में विविधता का लोप, सीता च रामश्च = सीतारामौ में संयोग से 'च' का लोप हुआ है।

### समासस्य प्रकाराः
पदों की प्रमुखता के आधार पर समास के मुख्य चार भेद होंगे— (1) अव्ययीभाव (2) तद्पुरुष (3) द्न्ध् व्रि (4) बहुव्रीहि। तद्पुरुष के दो उपभेद भी हैं— कमथ्यार्य एवं तद्गु। इस प्रकार सामान्य रूप से समास के छह भेद हैं।

### समासविग्रहः
समास होने पर सम्पूर्ण पद अव्यय बन जाता है तथा नपुंसकलिंग में प्रयुक्त होता है, यथा— यराशत्ति = शतति मनतिम्य, तानिष्चघ्नम् = तिघ्नानाम् अभावः, उपगमम् = गंगाया: समीपम्, अनुरूपम् = रूपस्य योग्यम्।

### समासस्य प्रयोगः
कहीं-कहीं पदों के बीच की विविधता का लोप नहीं भी होता है। यथा— क्षेचर:, युतितठिर:, निमेषचर: आदि। ऐसे समासों को अलुक समास कहिगे हैं।
