In this chapter, we learn about the impressive reign of King Krishnadeva Raya from the Vijayanagara Empire, a period that greatly advanced art, literature, and architecture. His court featured many poets, including the clever and humorous Tenali Rama, who played a crucial role in the king's life. The story begins with a quarrel between the king and his queen, Thirumalambal, caused by a misunderstanding stemming from the queen's yawning while the king recited a poem. This minor incident led to weeks of silence and tension in the palace as the king refused to speak to her. Thirumalambal, desperate to resolve the situation, sought the wise counsel of Tenali Rama. He listened carefully to her recounting of the events and agreed to help, but knew that he needed to approach the matter delicately. The next day in the royal court, amidst discussions about improving paddy cultivation, Tenali Rama seized the moment to share his thoughts. Initially met with skepticism when he mentioned revolutionary paddy seeds, he cleverly turned the conversation towards the importance of the person sowing the seeds rather than just the seeds themselves. By suggesting that improper sowing techniques could lead to poor harvests, especially if someone were yawning while doing so, he highlighted that a lack of care could lead to failure. His humorous analogy not only lightened the mood but also reminded the king of his own overreaction to the queen’s simple yawn. In that moment, realization dawned on Krishnadeva Raya, and he acknowledged his mistakes in their quarrel. This clever use of wit led to the king reflecting on his actions, ultimately fostering reconciliation.
