In a move to address the high volume of correction requests and speed up the process, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a new circular aimed at streamlining corrections to student demographic details. The circular, dated September 1, 2025, emphasizes that schools must be vigilant in ensuring the accuracy of student information from the time of admission.
The CBSE has observed a significant increase in requests for corrections to demographic data—such as a student’s name or date of birth—after results are declared, despite providing multiple opportunities for verification. According to the circular, the board offers schools and parents up to 20 chances to ensure details are correct before a student’s passing documents are issued.
These opportunities include:
Registration: Correct details are to be entered in school records, transfer certificates, and during Class IX registration.
Correction Windows: A dedicated window is provided after registration and again after the submission of the List of Candidates (LOC) for Class X and XII.
Verification: Schools are directed to download and share registration and admit cards with students and parents for verification and confirmation.
Despite these measures, a large number of correction requests are still submitted. The CBSE has noted that many of these requests are incomplete, lack proper supporting documents from previous schools, or are sent with illegible documents and are often ignored when the board asks for additional information, causing delays.
To ensure requests are processed in the shortest time possible, the CBSE has issued a set of strict guidelines. Schools must now:
Ensure 100% Accuracy: All student demographic details in school records must be 100% correct
Adhere to Instructions: Schools are required to strictly follow all instructions given by the CBSE during the registration and LOC submission processes.
Obtain Parent Confirmation: Schools must get confirmation from parents that the demographic details are correct.
Submit Complete Records: When a correction is required, schools must send all certified records from all previous schools as outlined in the provided Annexure-A table.
The circular explicitly states that incomplete requests will be summarily rejected.
The circular also highlights that some students are bypassing their schools and sending correction requests directly to the CBSE, including through legal notices or by approaching courts.
The CBSE advises students and parents to work with their schools to process any correction requests. This is because essential school records, which are required to make the correction, are not available to the board when a student submits a request directly. Following the proper channel through the school will help avoid delays in the decision-making process.
This new directive, signed by the Controller of Examinations, Dr. Sanyam Bhardwaj, is for strict compliance by all affiliated schools.
