Class X Sanskrit FAQs: Abhyaswaan Bhav - II Key Questions & Answers

A curated list of 100+ exam-relevant FAQs from Abhyaswaan Bhav - II (Class X NCERT) to help you prepare thoroughly for Class X Sanskrit exams.

Sanskrit is considered the mother of many Indian languages and a key to understanding India's ancient literature, philosophy, and sciences. It holds a sacred place in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, being the language of their scriptures. Its grammatical structure and vocabulary have influenced many modern Indian languages.
Sandhi refers to the phonetic combination of words or sounds in Sanskrit, leading to changes in spelling and pronunciation for euphony. For example, 'deva' + 'aalaya' becomes 'devaalaya' (temple of god). There are two main types: Svara Sandhi (vowel combinations) and Vyanjana Sandhi (consonant combinations).
In Sanskrit, the gender of a noun can often be identified by its ending. Masculine nouns commonly end in '-ah', '-ih', or '-uh', feminine nouns in '-aa', '-ii', or '-uu', and neuter nouns in '-am', '-a', or '-i'. However, there are exceptions, and sometimes the gender must be memorized.
The three main tenses in Sanskrit are past (laṭ), present (laṅ), and future (luṭ). They are formed by adding specific prefixes and suffixes to the verb root (dhatu). For example, the root 'gam' (to go) becomes 'gacchati' (present), 'agamat' (past), and 'gamishyati' (future).
Cases in Sanskrit (vibhakti) indicate the relationship of a noun or pronoun to the verb in a sentence. There are eight cases: nominative, accusative, instrumental, dative, ablative, genitive, locative, and vocative. Each case has specific endings that change based on the noun's gender, number, and declension.
'Karmani' prayoga (passive voice) emphasizes the action done to the subject, while 'bhave' prayoga (impersonal voice) focuses on the action itself without specifying the doer. For example, 'kriyate' (it is done) is karmani, and 'kriyate' (there is doing) is bhave, showing the action's occurrence without an explicit subject.
Compound words in Sanskrit (samasa) are formed by combining two or more words to create a new meaning, with the last word's gender and number determining the compound's. There are six types: Dvandva (copulative), Tatpurusha (determinative), Karmadharaya (descriptive), Bahuvrihi (possessive), Dvigu (numerical), and Avyayibhava (indeclinable).
Shlokas are verse forms in Sanskrit literature, used in epics, scriptures, and poetry for their rhythmic and mnemonic qualities. They convey philosophical, moral, and spiritual teachings succinctly. The most common meter is Anushtubh, consisting of four lines with eight syllables each, making them easy to memorize and recite.
Sanskrit poetry is characterized by its use of meters (chandas), figures of speech (alankara), and themes (rasa). It often employs similes, metaphors, and alliteration to enhance beauty and emotional appeal. The poetry ranges from devotional hymns to epic narratives, showcasing the language's versatility and depth.
Sanskrit's highly systematic grammar, as codified by Panini in the Ashtadhyayi, provides a framework for linguistic analysis. Its phonetics, morphology, and syntax have influenced modern linguistic theories. Sanskrit also preserves ancient Indo-European language features, making it crucial for comparative linguistics.
