CBSE directs schools to integrate Tele-MANAS services with 24x7 helpline, app, and counselor support for student mental well-being.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a directive to all affiliated schools to actively integrate and promote the Tele-MANAS (Tele Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States) programme. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, aims to make mental health care more accessible, confidential, and student-friendly across India .
Launched on 10 October 2022, Tele-MANAS provides a 24x7 free mental health helpline for citizens, especially students, through:
Toll-free numbers: 14416 and 1800-891-4416
53 dedicated state and UT-based cells
Services in 20 languages, with more being added
Trained mental health professionals providing counseling and referrals
A new video consultation platform for confidential, real-time support
The Tele-MANAS mobile app, available in Hindi and English
So far, the programme has already handled over 23 lakh calls, highlighting its growing role in addressing mental health needs.
Schools play a vital role in shaping students’ emotional resilience. By introducing Tele-MANAS, CBSE aims to provide students with direct access to professional support, helping to reduce stigma and encourage early help-seeking behavior.
CBSE has instructed schools to take the following steps:
Prominent Display – Put up helpline numbers and QR code posters in notice boards, libraries, counselor rooms, and ICT labs.
Awareness Drives – Share Tele-MANAS details in school newsletters, student handbooks, assemblies, and parent-teacher meetings.
Use of IEC Material – Screen awareness videos from the Ministry during life-skills and wellness activities.
Counselor Training – Build the capacity of school counselors and wellness coordinators to guide students towards Tele-MANAS when required.
Peer Engagement – Encourage student-led health awareness activities in collaboration with programmes under Samagra Shiksha and PM SHRI Schools .
For students, Tele-MANAS offers a safe, stigma-free, and confidential support system available anytime they need help. For parents, it ensures that schools are not only focusing on academics but also prioritizing emotional well-being.
This move reflects a strong push towards creating a healthier, more supportive school environment where mental health is treated with the same seriousness as academics.
