The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released a public notice detailing the mandatory requirements for students to be eligible for their Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations. The notice, issued on September 15, 2025, covers several key areas, including program duration, attendance, internal assessments, and rules for additional subjects.

According to the notice, there are three main requirements for students to be eligible to appear for the board exams:
Two-Year Program: Both Class 10 and Class 12 are considered two-year programs. This means students must have studied all their subjects for two years to be eligible for the exams.
75% Attendance: A minimum of 75% attendance is mandatory for all students.
Internal Assessment: Internal assessment is a compulsory and integral part of the evaluation process, as per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This is a two-year-long process, and a student's result cannot be declared if they haven't completed their internal assessments.
The notice also states that students who are regular but fail to complete their internal assessments will be placed in the"Essential Repeat" category.
The public notice also provides specific guidelines regarding additional subjects and students appearing as private candidates.
Additional Subjects: In Class 10, students can offer up to two subjects in addition to their five compulsory subjects, while Class 12 students can offer one additional subject. Similar to regular subjects, students must study these additional subjects for two years.
School Affiliation: The notice clarifies that if a school has not obtained permission from CBSE to offer a particular subject and lacks the necessary infrastructure (like teachers or labs), its students are not allowed to take that subject, either as a main or additional subject.
Essential Repeat & Compartment Candidates: Regular students who have been placed in the "Compartment" or "Essential Repeat" category in previous years can appear for the exam as private candidates.
Eligibility for Private Candidates: The notice clearly states that a student who does not meet the essential conditions mentioned in the notice is not eligible to appear for additional subject examinations as a private candidate.
This notice serves as a crucial reminder for all stakeholders—students, parents, and schools—about the core requirements for the CBSE board examinations
