In this chapter, we will learn about the defensive ankle hold technique, which is crucial for players to master in order to effectively defend against attackers during a raid in games like Kabaddi. The main goal of this technique is to catch the raider in a way that they have difficulty moving, allowing the defender to gain an upper hand. It helps players understand the importance of positioning, body control, and quick decision-making. First, let's discuss the body position necessary for successfully executing the ankle hold. A wider stance is important as it provides better balance. The upper body should lean slightly towards the raider, and most of your body weight should be placed on the leading leg, pointing in the direction of the raider. Flexing your knees also helps maintain stability. While doing all this, it’s vital that your hands are kept free and your eyes are focused on the raider to anticipate their movements. The next step involves your approach to the raider. Before attempting the ankle hold, take a moment to closely observe the raider’s foot movements. By doing so, you can better predict their next move. As you prepare to make your move, you will need to bend your upper body towards the raider while your leading leg bends to put you in position. Both of your hands should move toward the raider's ankle in a fluid action. When it comes to execution, it's crucial to understand how to grip the raider’s ankle correctly. The inner hand should be placed on the joint of the ankle, providing the necessary leverage to hold onto the raider. Your other hand should reinforce this grip. Once you have captured the raider, stability is key. You should lift the raider slightly toward your inner shoulder or pull them back by shifting your weight and taking small steps towards the end line. This action is what prevents the raider from escaping and creates a situation where they may lose their breath momentarily. To practice this technique, the chapter includes a lead-up activity. Set four different shapes on the court, and have defenders positioned just behind each shape. As players run towards a baulk line, they must react quickly when a shape is called out.
